The renowned Battlefield franchise is experiencing a notable shift in its creative leadership, with Craig Morrison being the latest Creative Director to exit the series. After taking on the role in August 2021 and later becoming the Studio Creative Director in December 2022, succeeding Lars Gustavsson, Morrison transitioned out of the franchise in February 2024. He has since moved on to join Blue Scarab Entertainment, as indicated by his LinkedIn profile. This departure is significant as it represents the second time a Creative Director has left the Battlefield franchise within the same year, an unusual occurrence that is often seen at the conclusion of a project.
Prior to Morrison's departure, Marcus Lehto, the Creative Director at Ridgeline Games, also exited the franchise. This was closely followed by an announcement from EA regarding the termination of 670 positions within the company, which included shutting down Ridgeline Games. In response to Lehto's departure, Laura Miele, the president of EA Entertainment, revealed that Lehto had decided to leave the project for personal reasons. As a result, the leadership at Criterion took over the single-player aspects of the project immediately. Furthermore, Ridgeline was to be integrated as a non-independent studio in Seattle, with some team members moving to Ripple Effect. These changes were made to maintain the momentum of the next Battlefield installment, with collaborative efforts across DICE, Ripple, and Criterion.
As of now, EA has not provided any comments regarding Craig Morrison's exit, but inquiries have been made for further clarification.
